Now in its third consecutive year, the MOOV Community Grant is designed to invest in grass-root community initiatives by helping schools realise essential projects or programmes. An astounding 597 applications were received from schools Australia-wide, making Forest Hill Primary School all the more overwhelmed by their success.
The money has been used to purchase ten brand new desktop computers, which will be housed in the library – itself having been rebuilt after flood damage left it entirely gutted from the waist down. The desktops will mean weekly computer classes can be conducted on premium new equipment, with the added bonus of children having increased computer access through individual scheduling during the week. The school’s students are already computer proficient but show an insatiable appetite to further their IT knowledge and capabilities, something the school is now capable of encouraging thanks to the new desktops.
MOOV Brand Manager Melissa Giuliani said Forest Hill Primary School was a deserved winner of a $5,000 Grant.
“This vision merits reward; young children stand to benefit by having more frequent access to high quality desktops. It is also the sort of project that can be realistically achieved with $5,000; helping to realise this story from start to end is very important to MOOV,” said Mrs Giuliani.

An astounding 597 applications were received from schools Australia-wide, making St Kieran’s all the more overwhelmed by their success.
The Grant will be used to purchase at least three bicycles, which will then be modified to specific special needs by local service providers. The bikes will be used as part of a bike riding programme that has been running in the school for three years and enables special needs students to participate in and enjoy bike riding. Some of the money may also be used to acquire street signage so that classes can simulate actual road riding, helping students become comfortable and confident enough to ride with their families outside the school boundaries.
MOOV Brand Manager Melissa Giuliani said St Kieran’s Catholic Primary was a deserved winner of a $5,000 Grant.
“This vision merits reward; young children stand to benefit by having their learning experience and general social confidence enriched in a very hands-on, tangible way. It is also the sort of project that can be realistically achieved with $5,000; helping to realise this story from start to end is very important to MOOV,” said Mrs Giuliani.

When it comes to mishaps, most little ones have their fair share. They are poor risk assessors and don’t have the motor skills to match their enthusiasm for discovery! While most parents can deal with a skinned knee, a more serious accident is a different matter. Most would lose their cool and fall to pieces. But if you arm yourself with knowledge you’ll be better equipped to handle the stress of an emergency.

Some general principles

Stay as calm as possible

Always follow a routine like the St John Ambulance’s “DRABC”

Call 000 if you need immediate help, or delegate someone to do it for you.

Stay with your child until help arrives.

What is DRABC?

These DRABC steps are most important to follow when a child is unconscious:

Danger Check for danger (to you or to your child). For example, don’t stay in the middle of the road after an accident, or near a fire.

Response Is she conscious? Try to rouse her by talking to her or touching her. If you can’t wake her, put her in the recovery position (bend far leg towards you, roll far arm across her body, roll her whole body towards you until she is lying on her side, turn chin up and mouth down) and call 000.

Airway Check her nose and mouth for anything that might be blocking her breathing (a piece of food or even some vomit). Remove the item if you can by using a finger to scoop it out.

Breathing Is her chest rising and falling? Can you feel breath on your cheek if you hold it close? If not, start expired air resuscitation (EAR – this is similar to cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) but without the chest compressions).

Circulation Is there a pulse? The best place to feel for a pulse is in the neck or the wrist. It can be really hard to feel a pulse, even for a doctor. If you can’t feel a pulse, it’s best to assume there isn’t one. If there is no heartbeat, start CPR straight away.

When should I call 000?
The Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines say that calling for help should always come before CPR, except when someone is drowning.
